The list in your head is shorter than the list you have. Familiar songs come round. A song you learned and liked goes quiet, and then it is gone. Every song here shows when you last used it, how often, and how many times this year.
By the next rehearsal, last time is already a guess. Write down the date and the songs while the night is still clear. When you plan again, that concert, service, or gig is still there. So are the songs that have gone quiet, and the ones you just added.
The list lives in one person's head, or in a file only they can open. If they are away, everyone else is stuck. Here the people who look after the group write it up, and everyone else can see the same songs and the same nights. A link or a QR code brings them in.
The question comes up in the room, not at a desk. What did we do last time? The list is on the phone you already have out. A night you have opened is still there when the signal is not.
You build the next programme from what you can recall. That is how last spring ends up on the programme again, and how a piece you spent the autumn learning never comes back. After the concert, the programme stays. Next time both are in front of you.
On Thursday, nobody can quite say what Sunday was. The same hymns come round. The one that landed at Easter goes quiet. Write the service down, and you can see both before you choose. The midweek practice is on that list too, so it does not turn into a second pile you forget.
The set becomes the ten songs you can start without thinking. A song the room liked falls off, and a month later no one mentions it. After the gig, what you played stays put. The next set can see the last one, and so can the person who just joined.
